José Márquez visits his daughter Susana at Friendship Park, the only official meeting place along the U.S.-Mexico border where separated families could gather through the fence. After living in San Diego for eighteen years, José was deported and has been unable to embrace his daughter for more than a decade. Physical borders are enduring reminders to immigrants that they do not belong. By focusing on the intimate encounters that once took place here, this image challenges what the wall was built to create: separation. These visits are no longer permitted, making this image a testament to the strength and resilience of families divided by immigration policies.
