Betty Keji James fled from Mukaya with her husband and children after fighting between government forces and rebels forced them to leave their home. Life in the IDP camp in Atende, near Yei, South Sudan, is marked by hardship and loss. Her husband was shot dead by an unknown person, leaving her to care for the children alone. With no access to education, her children remain out of school, and she worries about their future. Families depend on limited support from NGOs, yet daily life offers little stability. Betty says: “What we need is food and education for our children.”
