Isolation - Mirko Schimmelschmidt.jpg

More than 380,000 millionaires live in New York City. Roughly one in every 21 residents possesses a net worth of at least one million US dollars. At the same time, 350,000 New Yorkers lack permanent housing. Around 5,000 live on the streets. I encountered many homeless people in the city that never sleeps. It seemed to have become part of the "normality" amidst the bustle of this global metropolis. This photo was taken on "The Mall" in Central Park—a spot teeming with tourists during the day. Late in the evening, I noticed a shirtless man choosing one of the benches—presumably for the night. I wanted to respectfully portray his individual isolation within a city teeming with people.
