Part of The Bedroom Stories, this photograph depicts my parents in their bedroom in my hometown in Poland. It was our first creative collaboration despite years of emotional distance. We've since drifted apart and, more recently, closer again. Warm light falls across their skin, while the cool walls behind them reflect the distance that once defined us. Above them hangs the Black Madonna of Częstochowa beside a portrait of my great-grandparents, both brutally killed during the Second World War, including my great-grandmother at Auschwitz concentration camp. Photographed soon after my father survived cancer, the image reflects how home can hold love, silence, memory, and inherited trauma.
