I'd been researching my PhD in the High Arctic when the Covid-19 pandemic closed borders across the world; it'd be 18 months before I could return home. In the end, I grew roots in the Arctic – inasmuch as that's possible – and today remain one of its 4 million human inhabitants. Philosopher Paul Virilio writes that in the C21st, hundreds of millions of people will be forced into near-perpetual migration by forces of globalisation and, especially, by environmental disruptors such as rising sea levels & pandemics. I used my "exile" to cut out the 15.69m2 of sea ice that'd be destroyed by my fossil fuel emissions flying between Australia & Greenland, one seat, economy return: 5.23t of CO2e.
