This image is part of an initiative called the "Pink Sock Project" started be a school girl in South Africa, raising money for cancer. This project was inspired by a bigger South African cancer initiative called “Pink trees for Pauline” a non-profit cancer funding initiative where trees are wrapped in pink cloth to raise awareness and funds for all cancers including breast cancer which one of the co-founding members Adri Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen survived. The colour Pink is often associated with breast cancer due to the very recognisable pink ribbon used to raise awareness for breast cancer. The fact that the youth in a remote South African town are made aware of not only breast cancer but cancer as a whole, that they use their pocket money to raise funds for cancer is a symbol of great hope for the future.
