I met her while photographing in Ladakh, dressed in traditional clothes and wearing a perak lined with turquoise. What I remember most was how calmly she looked back at my camera. There was no need to direct her or ask for anything more. I wanted to keep the portrait simple and let her expression, the weathered face and the details she wore speak for themselves. Sometimes a photograph is just about being there when someone chooses to look back.
