From a young age, I felt as if I were being raised “beyond the boundary” within my own family. That boundary was often the door to my room, behind which I would hide while life went on on the other side. Only very recently did I realize that I had been living in a fantasy—about the possibility of close relationships, warmth, and attention. This photograph was taken while saying goodbye to my childhood home after it was sold. It felt like a step into a new life.
