Bio

Michael Steffen is a Cologne-based photographer whose work has been presented in international exhibitions and publications. He studied Applied African Studies with a focus on Anthropology, Development Policy, and Development Sociology at the University of Bayreuth. Shaped by several years spent in South Africa, Jamaica, Tanzania, and South Sudan, his photographic practice reflects political, social, and cultural realities. Through photography, he examines human rights, inequality, and racism while also focusing on the dignity and the beauty of people’s lived experiences. His work is guided by empathy and a belief in a more just world, and seeks to challenge clichés. He also finds a sense of quiet in nature - landscape photography forms another body of work. Alongside his artistic practice, Michael works full-time in humanitarian aid and development cooperation for an international NGO.
